Stellenbosch University awards honorary doctorate to Professor Leonard Wantchekon
Stellenbosch University (SU) awarded Professor Leonard Wantchekon an honorary doctorate on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. He received the degree of Doctor of Commerce (DCom), honoris causa, at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.
Wantchekon was recognized for his significant contributions to the fields of political economy, development economics, and economic history. During his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to SU for the honorary doctorate and acknowledgment of his work.
“I am delighted to contribute to the establishment of robust and innovative academic institutions in Africa, particularly in South Africa,” Wantchekon remarked.
“This presents a tremendous opportunity for me, and I eagerly anticipate engaging with SU, other esteemed universities, and the South African university system on both personal and institutional levels. I look forward to continuing the work we have undertaken at SU over the past several years.”
Another recipient of the award was James Robinson, renowned for his insights into economic development and political institutions.
